Parks and promenades

THEATRE PARK
The Theatre Park is a famous gathering point for Rijeka citizens located in the heart of the city, in front of the “Ivan pl. Zajc” Croatian National Theatre building and facing the City market. It was created in 1875 by levelling the sea line and following its recent reconstruction it received its historical characteristics in the classical and Art Nouveau style from those periods enriched by modern elements. The curiosities of the park are surely the 9 rose trees that have found their habitat in the park and have “musical” and “theatrical” names: Charleston, Hendel, Concerto, Concertino, Conductor, Solo, Prima ballerina, Maria Callas and Ballet. The park has been the winner of the "Blue Flower" award for the most beautiful park in Croatia two years in a row.

MLAKA PARK
Mlaka Park, also known as Giardino Pubblico, is one of the oldest and most beautiful parks in Rijeka. It was designed in 1874 by Filibert Bazarig PhD as indicated by the proposals of Rijeka’s mayor at the time, Giovanni Ciotta as a kind of frontier between the city centre and the western suburbs as well as the announcement of the historical centre for those arriving from that direction into the centre. Originally a spacious park irrigated by natural resources, it was once a favourite meeting point although today occupies a smaller area due to the construction of buildings in its surroundings over time. In spite of its reduced size, this park located close to the train station, is still a pleasant place for relaxation and walking.

NIKOLA HOST’S PARK
As well as Mlaka Park, Nikola Host’s Park is one of the oldest in Rijeka.  It was created in the 19th century as a botanical garden close to Villa Androch, when it was owned by archduke Joseph, a great lover and connoisseur of the art of gardening.  Located on rocky ground and set out over several layers, the park, with its sculptures, fountains and exotic plants brought by the archduke from around the world, has achieved the appearance of an English garden. This appearance has partly been lost over time. The park received its name from the Austrian botanist who took part in its planting, and which today is located in the State archive in Villa Androch.

VLADIMIR NAZOR’S PARK
This park is the uphill continuation of Nikola Host’s Park and the Natural History Museum can be found here with its beautiful botanical garden that was opened in 2005. The park received its name from one of the greatest Croatian writers and poets.

TRSAT PARK (HEROES PARK)
Trsat Park extends from 95 to 145 metres above sea level. This tiny part of nature preserved in the city was created in the period between the two world wars (in 1926) following the project by architect, Zlatko Prikril and horticultural expert, Josip Kulfanek, famous for his use of autochthonous plants and respecting the park’s natural rocky landscape. The park consists of two parts, it covers a surface of 45,000 m² and the union of pine-trees, cypresses and evergreen shrubs, surrounded by coniferous forest are in perfect harmony.  A memorial ossuary can be found on the highest level of the park as a symbol for victims fighting against fascism, and there is also a playground for younger visitors where swings, seesaws and other such attractions can be found.

JOŽA VLAHOVIĆ’S PARK – KRNJEVO (SKATE PARK)
This park is located on Krnjevo and besides its expected contents is most famous as being the first and only official skate park in Rijeka.
