The
Modello Palace, another product of the Helmer and
Fellner workshop, was completed in 1885. Quiet Neo-Renaissance
decorations alternate with playful Neo-Baroque ones on its
facades. The abundant decorations of the exterior are repeated
in the interior as well, particularly in the stuccos of the
ceremonial hall. The palace illustrates the ambitions of Rijeka
to imitate the Ring of Vienna, and to incessantly compete
with Trieste. Today the building houses the Central City Library
and the cultural centre of the Italian minority, the popular
Circolo italiano di cultura.
Continuing your visit to the west you will find yourself at
one end of Rijeka harbour, built in the second half of the
19th century.
